Anything Horror's Best Horror Shorts of 2014

Honored and humbled as BERENICE gets more press today.  Scott Shoyer at Anything Horror includes it on his Best Horror Shorts of 2014.  "BERENICE is a modern update on the classic Edgar Allan Poe short story about death and obsession. In all his short films Kipp has the ability to capture the beauty within the horrifying and BERENICE is no exception. BERENICE is a beautifully shot (by Kenneth Kotowski) and acted short film -- one you won’t soon forget."  http://anythinghorror.com/2014/12/30/anything-horror-scotts-best-horror-shorts-of-2014/

Reel Guy Reviews on BERENICE

Real Guy Reviews gives an unsentimental and unpretentious rave review of BERENICE. "A modern telling of an Edgar Allen Poe classic...the acting was amazing and the pacing of the story was fantastic. Jeremiah has the ability to have you put aside your critics cap and do what he intends for us all to do, enjoy the story. All in all, this is a wonderful, complete, polished piece of fiction from a name that you will come to look forward to seeing."

Thank You

Some kind words about DROOL from one of my heroes. "I've never seen anything like it, never had those feelings provoked in me before! Thanks so much for this gorgeous work!" - iconic Canadian film director Guy Maddin ("The Saddest Music in the World", "Twilight of the Ice Nymphs")

From Dusk Til Con Interview

Really enjoyed doing this interview with Tracy Crockett for From Dusk Til Con. He includes photos of me from 10 years ago, which is fitting because we talk a bit about my childhood impulses to make films. I also get to mention how I'm "hoping to work with ZoĆ« Daelman Chlanda again, who was the lead in a body horror short I directed a few years ago called CONTACT. She projects strength, intelligence, vulnerability and a deeply haunted quality."

Read all about it here:

"The contribution of the actors is one of the more satisfying parts of making a movie. Underneath Lukas Hassel's charming leading man persona is an ability to tap into a very dark, uncomfortable place. He brought significant choices to the role. He also engendered trust and safety with his co-stars before delving into an evil place with them on-camera. It’s a great gift working with him, and he’s sensitive to the needs of the movie and the scene."

Great Chat About Recent Film Work at The Slaughtered Bird

"Lukas, who is also a talented writer and director in his own right, was involved in the process from the very first draft and invested deeply into the role. I greatly enjoy collaborating with him. He’s fearless and uncompromising, open to discovery, and we trust each other’s process completely. That’s the kind of company I like to keep." - from interview with The Slaughtered Bird

Celluloid Terror covers THE MINIONS and PAINKILLER

"THE MINIONS is a subtle and largely subdued creeper...haunting and beautifully done."

"PAINKILLER takes a page out of the David Cronenberg book of body horror. There's a good bit of blood and gore packed into the 15 minute runtime and even a good look at the nasty little organism. The acting is strong from top to bottom and the story is one that really hits home in a time where cancer is running rampant and relatively so little progress has been made in fighting it."

The Horror Geek and The Fifth Dimension review THE MINIONS

Some wonderful new reviews of THE MINIONS and some of my other films...

“There are some really great shots -- shots that seem like normal things you'd see in the city or in every day life, but presented in a way that gives this weird air of menace. All of the music and effects add to that feeling of foreboding that permeates the film. Great work. Moody, atmospheric, beautifully shot, and quite haunting.” – Mike Bracken, The Horror Geek

“Based on a true incident, THE MINIONS is about being thrust into a desperate situation that requires mutual trust between strangers. Given the volatility of the circumstances and the uneasy state of mind of the characters, a lot can go wrong. And does. THE MINIONS works wonderfully in transforming a Grimm’s Fairy-like tale of being lost in the forest and taken advantage of by supernatural forces, and instead sets the story in a modern sprawling urban city. The film nicely captures that sense of ever increasing isolation and, without hesitation, increases the pressure throughout to result in an enigmatic and thought provoking climax.” - Stuart Anderson, The Fifth Dimension

Great Interview about THE MINIONS, BERENICE and PAINKILLER at Review Fix

Great interview with Patrick Hickey Jr at Review Fix about THE MINIONS, BERENICE and PAINKILLER. Read the whole article here: http://reviewfix.com/…/review-fix-exclusive-jeremiah-kipp-…/
"THE MINIONS was an opportunity to work once again with writer Joe Fiorillo. He was working on a book, and one of the chapters involved the true story of this man wandering home and his strange encounter with these two women along the Witch’s Path. As with most of Joe’s work, it was like thesacred and profane living side-by-side. The story reminded me of THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW where Ichabod Crane has a confrontation with superstition, or the supernatural. Only THE MINIONS is told in a modern urban city street; so it also reminded me of the Kitty Genovese murder case and the outsiders we can encounter in a metropolis. Things can jump right out and grab you."

11-19-14 Premiere Screening of THE MINIONS in NYC

Beautiful people: fearless producer Lauren Rayner, wonderful actors Cristina Doikos and Robin Rose Singer at the premiere of The Minions, a short film. Loved making the film, and the party was grand.

As Lauren said: "Wow! The screening last night for The Minions, a short film was so far above & beyond what we expected. Over 125 people trekked out in the cold to watch our 8 minute film and the Q&A was one of the best I've experienced in a while."

At the MINIONS Q&A, actress Robin Rose Singer answers an audience question: "Which character do you think was the most malevolent?" Nyah-hah-hah-hahhhhh...

Review of THE MINIONS at Coryfilm.com

“Many of the signature Kipp elements are here: stylish visuals, rich atmosphere, a sense of unease created in the midst of beautifully composed shots; an evocative score, strong use of settings and locations, committed and fearless work from cast members. More about the experience than narrative, this is a visceral piece, intriguing. Much like the work of director Terrence Malick, the journey of the viewer through the lushly sensory piece is central.” – coryfilm.com

New Review of Berenice

Rogue Cinema reviews BERENICE (part of the Creepers anthology): "Pure cinematic horror goodness...If you love Poe and if you like horror anthologies, then check out “Berenice” and Creepers!"

Interview at Rogue Cinema

I chat with Misty Layne at Rogue Cinema about some recent projects. "I’d love to make a feature length movie based on the main character from The Minions, a short film, with an entire project set within that strange half-world between witches and madness. Lukas Hassel, who played the role, is a wonderful actor; I feel like we and writer Joe Fiorillo have a lot more to explore together."

New Reviews for THE MINIONS

Some good press for THE MINIONS!

"THE MINIONS is a psychologically focused supernatural thriller...It's about a man's decision to take a risk, to follow the witches' path, and ends up having to pay the price for doing so. Great acting from the entire cast, especially Lukas Hassel as William." - Film Bizarro

"Written by Joe Fiorillo, there’s a lot going on in THE MINIONS...a hypnotizing short film that shouldn’t be missed." - Scott Shoyer, Anything Horror

Thoughtful review of THE MINIONS

"Director Jeremiah Kipp once again amps up the mood with his latest short THE MINIONS...[the film] is one thing on its surface and a complete other once the reality of its predator/prey dynamic is revealed. Billed as a witch story, our knowledge of such subject matter’s fiction braces us for creature horror only to get blindsided by psychopathy and every day dread." - great review by Jared Mobarek

Horror News Network covers BERENICE in CREEPERS

First review of BERENICE

First review of BERENICE from the wonderful Richard Propes. "One of four short films included in Creepers - Horror Anthology Movie Volume Two...Kipp has already proven himself to be a master of building suspense and he does so quite nicely here. When watching a short film from an anthology, I've always felt that one short film should make you want to watch the rest of them and such is the case with this captivating film that is alongside films based upon the works of Joe R. Lansdale, Jeff Strand, and Lafcadio Hearn. For more information on the film, visit the Creepers website linked to in the credits." http://www.theindependentcritic.com/berenice

Wrapped Principal Photography on MASTERMIND and SOUND/VISION

We just wrapped principal photography on MASTERMIND, a music video with an amazing cast. Pictured below is the extraordinary Joanna Gleason.  Shot by Kenneth Kotowski (my DP on EDWARD ALBEE: A TRANSFORMATIVE MOMENT and ALEX).

We also completed principal on a short indie drama called SOUND/VISION written, produced by and starring Ari Rossen, shot by Eric Giovon.  A tale of friendship and music, and a refreshing change of pace from the dark, scary, surreal and unnerving work I usually do.  This was closer in tone to movies like THE KING'S SPEECH; and it was a privilege to work with Eric again.

In-Depth review and interview at Daily Grindhosue

From a great review and interview at Daily Grindhouse. " The Days God Slept, a short film embraces a wonderfully dreamlike atmosphere, and treads into latter-day David Lynch territory as reality and time start to get increasingly twisted. Once again we are trapped with characters who seem to have been traumatized (or deadened) by a cold and unfeeling world, but it’s also a reflection on secrets and acceptance, and somehow maintains an echo of hope despite a collection of disturbing images. Once again gorgeously photographed by Dominick Sivilli it also has an intriguingly ethereal script by Joe Fiorillo. A real winner, and proof of Kipp’s flexibility as a director."

Romanian Publication Post-Modern

Romanian publication Post-Modern thoughtfully views THE DAYS GOD SLEPT as a parable of the fall of paradise. "Or was the real intention to provide that mixture of degradation and disobedient love that exists as a psychic defense?"

And on DROOL: "The female main character makes winding movements that express vexation through contemporary dance...hermetically sealed yet fascinating...demonic and surrealist, comparable to Lars von Trier."
